Seminole Classic is a mid-sized casino in Hollywood, Florida, rating 4.0 from more than 5,300 Google reviewers. On the floor it is unremarkable next to the Hard Rock a short distance away.
Its significance is entirely historical, and it is hard to overstate. This is the site where tribal gaming in the United States started.
The 1979 bingo hall
In 1979 the Seminole Tribe of Florida opened a high-stakes bingo hall here, in an unassuming metal building. At the time Florida law required bingo parlours to be run by non-profits, open two days a week, with jackpots capped at $100. The Seminole hall ignored all three limits.
Broward County Sheriff Bob Butterworth shut it down. The Tribe sued on the grounds of tribal sovereignty, and in 1981 a federal appeals court ruled in the Tribe's favour in Seminole Tribe of Florida v. Butterworth.
That decision is the foundation of the modern Indian gaming industry. Every tribal casino in the country — the Hard Rocks, the Talking Sticks, the Mystic Lakes — traces its legal lineage back through that case to this building. It also set the sequence that led to the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act a few years later.
The metal shed is long gone; the property has since had a $25 million renovation. But the site is the same one.
What's on the floor
More than 1,000 slot machines and table games, plus bingo — which the property has never stopped running, and which is the right thing to play here if you have any feeling for the history.
As a Seminole property under the tribe's compact with Florida, it can offer house-banked live tables that the state's pari-mutuel casinos cannot.
There are four restaurants and weekend entertainment.
Classic or Hard Rock?
They are close to each other in Hollywood and they serve different visits.
Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood is the flagship — the guitar-shaped hotel, roughly 200 tables, a 45-table poker room, and the crowds that go with all of it.
Classic is smaller, quieter and quicker to get into. If you want a floor rather than a spectacle, this is the better choice, and it happens to be the more interesting building.
